Breastfeeding can alter British class system; at least researchers at University College London think so. In a recent study they have found that the “breastfeeding effect” on babies on the later year can increase the chance of social advancement.
The study involved testaments of more than 30,000 people who are now in their middle age quite advanced in their social circle. The study also backed up earlier studies on breastfeeding, stating it boost children brainpower and minimizes stress level in later stages.
The research is not clear of the mechanism by which the confidence and self-awareness are developed in children. There are theories that nutrients in the milk can cause the positive effect, whereas some believe the effect of skin-to-skin contact and emotional bonding between mother and babies or combination of both.
In England just under three quarter of mothers breastfeed their children for at least 6 months to one year.
This research paper is published in the British Medical Journal, taking the lives of two groups of around 17,000 people: one set is born in a single week in 1958 and another during in 1970.
However, the background factor is also considered during the measure of social climbing. Social class is segregated into four categories according to their jobs – unskilled, semi-skilled, manual work, professional or managerial work.
The researchers of the study also said that the breastfeeding provided the evidence of long-term health, development and behavioral advantages during childhood stage. These things are important to condition a better and healthy behavioral pattern in adults. They also argued that the breastfeeding helped to develop brain function, boost intellect and thus directly increases the chance of social acceptance and advancement.
